A warm, light-toned hardwood plywood made for clean cutting and engraving on consumer laser machines. At 3mm, this 600 x 300mm Birch Laserply sheet is the range's all-rounder - the sheet to default to when you don't yet know what the next project is.

Birch is a true hardwood, and denser than the pine and basswood options. That density is what you feel during assembly rather than during the cut: small teeth, thin tabs and narrow spans hold their shape instead of flexing, and edges stay crisp when handling. It makes birch the pick for parts that do a job - jigs, gear trains, boxes, mechanism plates and anything that gets used more than once.

The face is a soft golden-cream with light patterns, a warmer hue rather than stark, and takes stain and clear finishes particularly well. Though there are two things to weigh up: that figure adds character but means engraved tone varies slightly across a panel, so basswood is the better choice for photographic raster work. And Birch costs more than Radiata - worth it when the part matters, but less so when you're still guessing.

Features

  • Material: Birch Plywood
  • Size: 600 x 300mm
  • Thickness: 3mm
  • Colour: Warm light golden, light patterning
  • Face grade: A face / C back
  • Applications: Jigs, boxes and enclosures, mechanism parts, signage, plaques and keepsakes

Laser Cutting Plywood

Every sheet in this range is manufactured void-free, so the laser beam meets consistent material wherever it cuts: no bubbling, no blown-out patches, and laser setting profiles that hold from one sheet to the next. The range is pressed in Melbourne using formaldehyde-free adhesives, removing one major source of fumes - which counts in classrooms, design studios and shared workshops. Timber is sourced from FSC-certified or sustainably managed forests.

Choose Your Sheet

Pale, and Easy on the Wallet

  • Radiata 3mm - The value option - softwood, light blonde, plainest face, lowest price in the range.
  • Basswood 3mm - Near-white and almost grainless behind a clear A-grade face. Holds the finest detail.
  • Birch 3mm - Warm, light and harder-wearing - the versatile hardwood all-rounder.
  • Birch 6mm - The same material at double the thickness - for joints, enclosures and stronger projects.

Colour and Character

  • Jarrah 3mm - Rich terracotta red - Australian hardwood, and the boldest colour here.
  • Walnut 3mm - Deep rich brown - the showpiece sheet.
  • Eucalypt 3mm - Earthy, figured Australian grain behind an A-grade face.
  • Bamboo 2.5mm - Carbonised to a dark caramel-brown that emphasises its very unique and fine grain. Great sustainability.

What is "Face Grade"?

Plywood is a stack of thin veneers glued together, so each outer face is graded separately - which is why a sheet is described as something like "A face / C back". Grades run A to D and describe appearance only, not strength.

  • A - Best. Smooth and effectively knot-free. Ideal for staining or a clear finish.
  • B - Very good. May arrive with small, neatly filled repairs. Still clean enough for premium joinery and furniture.
  • C - Sound but plainer. Expect knots and minor defects. Best painted, or used as the hidden side.
  • D - Roughest. Defects left unfilled. Suitable for structural and concealed work only.

Which way up you cut matters: put the better face up for engraving, and the lower grade down against the bed.

What is a glue bond rating?

Bond rating describes how well the glue survives moisture. It says nothing about how strong the panel is, and nothing about what the adhesive is made of.

  • A bond - Permanent. Fully weatherproof and boil-proof, as used in marine plywood.
  • B bond - Exterior. Stands up to weather exposure, though less durably than A.
  • C bond - Interior. Copes with occasional moisture only. Not for outdoor use.
  • D bond - Interior, dry conditions only.

Every sheet in this range is C bond, so keep finished pieces indoors - or seal them thoroughly and accept a shorter life outside.

Note: Laser cutting produces harmful fumes regardless of the material. Always use proper extraction and ventilation.
