An ESP32-S3 controller with built-in audio, a colour screen and two-way infrared, all in a 48 x 24mm stick. Use it as a voice assistant front end, an infrared remote for smart-home devices, or a portable Wi-Fi IoT node that runs on its own battery.

On most small boards, audio is something you wire in later. On the M5StickS3, sound capture and playback are already built in, and M5Stack's Xiaozhi voice assistant and ESP-Claw guides get it listening and talking before you write any driver code.

If you're upgrading from an M5StickC, check your Hats first. The StickS3 uses the new Hat2-Bus and does not physically fit the Hat Mini JoyC (U156), Hat Mini EncoderC (U157) or Hat 18650C (U080).

External 5V output is off by default in M5Unified; call M5.Power.setExtOutput(true); to power Grove devices and the IR transmitter and receiver. When 5V output is on, supply power only through USB or 5VIN on the Hat2-Bus. Turn the speaker amp off while receiving IR, keep volume below 75% on battery power, and don't open the enclosure, because that can damage the antenna.

Features

  • Build voice-driven projects without extra audio hardware. A codec, microphone and amplified speaker are built in and already wired.

  • Run larger applications on a dual-core ESP32-S3 with onboard PSRAM.

  • Control smart-home devices by infrared with a built-in transmitter and receiver.

  • Add motion input and on-device feedback with a 6-axis IMU, two programmable buttons and a colour screen.

  • Go untethered on the built-in battery. Dedicated power management keeps the draw near zero when the device is off.

  • Expand without soldering through the Hat2-Bus header and the Grove port.

  • Mount it on ferrous metal surfaces using the magnetic back.

  • Code in the toolchain you already use. Arduino, UiFlow2, ESP-IDF or PlatformIO, with the M5Unified, M5GFX and M5PM1 libraries.
