The Raspberry Pi Foundation wanted to create a HAT which not only contained a plethora of sensors but an interactive LED display with user input. The Sense HAT is the complete package if you're looking for a HAT to learn all kinds of different programming and hardware concepts. In fact, it's so cool, that the Raspberry Pi Foundation is using it to perform scientific experiments onboard the International Space Station!

The Sense hat gives you access to:

  • Orientation (yaw, pitch & roll) via an accelerometer, 3D gyroscope, and magnetometer
  • Pressure
  • Humidity
  • Temperature

It'd be a bit boring if all that data had to be contained to the terminal, so there's an 8x8 RGB LED matrix which can be used to display anything you like! A compass, tilt display, or interactive games such as Tetris, Pong, Snake, or Space Invanders (just to name a few) could all be displayed and interacted with using the onboard joystick. Oh yeah, there's an onboard joystick too, cool right!

Fortunately, in the spirit of Raspberry Pi, you don't need to be a programming wizard to get started with the Pi Sense Hat. There's a complete database of projects, information, ideas, and instructions on the AstroPi website.

Technical Specs:

  • Gyroscope
    • Angular rate sensor (dps): ~245/500/2000
  • Accelerometer
    • Linear acceleration sensor (g): ~2/4/8/16
  • Magnetometer
    • Magnetic sensor (gauss): ~4/8/12/16
  • Barometer: 260 - 1260 hPa absolute range (accuracy depends on the temperature and pressure, ~0.1 hPa under normal conditions)
  • Temperature sensor: Accurate to ~2°C in the 0-65°C range
  • Relative humidity sensor: Accurate to ~4.5% in the 20-80%rH range, accurate to ~0.5°C in 15-40°C range
  • 8x8 RGB LED matrix display
  • Small 5 button joystick
  • 65.1mm x 56.6mm x 13.9mm (2.6" x 2.2" x 0.5")
  • 20.4g (0.7oz)

**The Raspberry Pi Sense HAT is compatible with the Raspberry Pi 2Model B+, and Model A+, but NOT the earlier 26-pin models of Raspberry Pi 1 Model B & A's. Pi not included!**

  • Rain Gauge Data Logger
  • Summary A Raspberry Pi 3B is used to collect digital counts from an electronic rain gauge (1mm of rain per reed switch closure by magnetic see-saw). It has been running without issues for over 12 months. A UPS powers the Pi so it is immune from short power glitches. The total count is displayed on an LCD screen with reset and inc/dec test buttons. “To HTML” and “To LCD” routines are also included to simp...
  • Television Media Centre
  • Introduction: I have a flat screen television that is about 7 years old that I purchased before Smart TVs were commonly available. What I wanted to achieve with My Pi project was to turn my slightly old TV into a media centre. I wanted to play music through my TV as well as play saved movies and stream internet content. It was important for me to be able to stream ABC iView and SBS On Demand as they provide a free service and ...
  • GraviTrack Enhancements - Lights and Sound
  • Introduction Searching for solar panels and related items on the Core Electronics website; I came across the Solarbotics GraviTrack Marble Machine Kit. I thought the kit would be a good educational tool for the grandkids. The kit was a hit, but the power switch was hard to access at the back of the machine and it only turned on and off. I had been experimenting with programmable RGB LEDs, Piezo speakers and a Light dependent re...
  • Mass SD card Image Writer
  • We've built a mass SD card writer using a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, some USB hubs and SD card readers. This beast has enough ports to write 49 SD cards at once! At Core Electronics, sometimes logistics hang-ups mean that suppliers cannot meet our demand for pre-flashed SD cards. During these periods we have to pick up the slack by manually imaging blank SD cards we source ourselves. Of course, this is a super-tedious process, and ...
