The Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ (note the plus on the end) is the latest generation board released by the Raspberry Pi Foundation on 14 March 2018. It has a 1.4Ghz Quad-Core Processor, WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI, USB along with much more. Oh, and it's about the size of a credit card!

If you are starting with Raspberry Pi then take a look at our Starter Kit which includes the essential accessories at a special bundled price.

Features:

At the heart of this board is a Broadcom BCM2837B0 - it's a 64-bit 1.4Ghz Quad-Core processor that is referred to as the "System on Chip" (SoC for short). Alongside the SoC is RAM and other essential hardware, leaving you with an incredibly cost-effective personal computer that has enough oomph to run a range of operating systems, play high definition video, even retro gaming.

To get your Pi up and running you'll need:

And to control your Pi and see what's going on you'll also need:

We've put together a free Raspberry Pi Workshop (30+ videos) to help quick-start your adventures for everyday computing through to Internet of Things projects.

If you need more ideas, then take a look at our community projects created with Raspberry Pi, or our wide range of tutorials.

Upgrading from the previous model? Here are some tips:

  • You will need to download the latest version of NOOBS / Raspbian for this board to function. Older versions will result with a "Rainbow Screen" along with a "Lightning Bolt" symbol. Setup a fresh copy of NOOBS and you are ready to go (here's how - or get a preloaded card).
  • The RPi 3 B+ has the same form factor as the previous RPi 3 B (older RPi 3 enclosures will fit).
  • Custom/tight fitting enclosures may have an obstruction with the taller SoC package - doesn't affect anyone using official or popular RPi cases.

  • Mass SD card Image Writer
  • We've built a mass SD card writer using a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, some USB hubs and SD card readers. This beast has enough ports to write 49 SD cards at once! At Core Electronics, sometimes logistics hang-ups mean that suppliers cannot meet our demand for pre-flashed SD cards. During these periods we have to pick up the slack by manually imaging blank SD cards we source ourselves. Of course, this is a super-tedious process, and ...

I have only had the new model for a few days but it seems to be a bit more responsive and maybe a little cooler running but I don't have any measurements to back up my feelings. (Posted on 17/04/2018)

It was really useful but there wasn't too big a improvement from RPi 3B. (Posted on 17/04/2018)

this is great device. I bought a second one.

only a slight upgrade over previous model. Wifi is stronger.
just a disappointment that they still use the USB 2.0 bus which crippled the 'gigabit' ethernet.

proper usb 3 and true gigabit ethernet would have been a winner. (Posted on 9/04/2018)

I received the Pi 3B+ shortly after I ordered it and I have set it up as a home control system. It runs, Node Red, Mosquitto (MQTT Broker), MYSQL and quite few other things and it also talks to my Amazon Alexa... Still setting it up and it’s fun... I would really recommend buying the PI3 B+ (Posted on 4/04/2018)

The Raspberry Pi3 B+ is simply awesome. It boots faster, it runs programs faster, It runs full 1080p smoothly, Netflix, mp4's, streamed videos without any problems. Because it is new, not all OS's will run on it yet. There is an updated version of Raspbian that runs great. For a mp4/Youtube streaming playback GUI: https://github.com/KenT2/tboplayer/blob/master/README.md and native run Netflix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAL3v5uNH2E (Posted on 30/03/2018)

Excellent board, however note that the smaller components on the board have changed slightly (resistor positions etc) and some of the existing Pi cases made for earlier versions might not fit properly. (Posted on 29/03/2018)

A nice performance bump to the standard Pi 3 Model B. The integrated wireless works well and when paired with an external USB Wifi dongle makes a decent dual wireless access point. (Posted on 29/03/2018)

Even though I have a collection of RPis from the RPi 3 and RPiW, I wanted a machine that also allowed WiFi transmissions on the 5.8GHz band. I did not necessarily purchase the latest RPi for the faster SOC, though it may help if I want to experiment with video, audio and number crunching experiments.

Knowing that the latest model uses a little more power, I decided to purchase a number of heatsink kits suitable for the various RPi models. For this model I purchased the $1.95 kit together with the enclosure and associated fan. Fitting the heatsinks and fan was straightforward.

An important adjutant to the product is Core's online technical support which adds value to the product. The technical support forum is monitored/supervised by the people in the know at Core. Various members of Core's technical team contribute their advice and opinions. Very valuable indeed.

On top of that, other retailers are selling this model for much more than Core's. Considering the small cost of postage and the online technical support it represents value for money.

    Thank you,
Anthony of Belfield (Posted on 29/03/2018)
