Nothing makes a project more exciting like motion, and now it's easier than ever with the PiicoDev® Servo Driver. You can control up to four RC Servos independently to create angular or continuous rotational motion. Use it to open and close a gate, beat a drum or pluck a string, or even equip your robot army with grabby claws!

The PiicoDev Servo Driver features a dedicated PWM chip that takes care of generating the servo signals, all you need to do is tell it what angle or speed you want to set your servo. There are the regular daisy-chainable PiicoDev connectors so you can add this module to your project without soldering - and additional USB-C connectors to provide separate, high-current power to your servos. Better still, the Servo Driver has four addressing options set by the Address Switch (ASW) - you can daisy chain up to four Drivers together for a maximum of 16 servos! That ought to be enough for most projects.

We've prepared a great guide full of useful examples to help you get started working with your favourite development board in Python/MicroPython.

Features

  • Control up to four servos independently
  • Daisy chain up to four Servo Drivers together for more complex projects
  • No soldering necessary
  • A great guide to get you started
  • PiicoDev connector, compatible with Qwiic and STEMMA QT (3.3V only)
  • 2.54mm breakout for breadboarding/prototyping
  • Manufactured and supported in Australia by Core Electronics

Getting Started Guides

We've prepared a getting-started guide that works with Raspberry Pi, Pico, and Micro:bit.

Picking the right servo and power supply

We recommend getting started with either the FS90 Micro Servo, or FS90R Continuous Rotation Micro Servo.

Servos are pretty power-hungry! We recommend a quality power supply, and budgeting about 0.7A per micro-servo, and as much as 2.4A per standard servo. This all depends on what you're asking your servo to do - how fast to move and how much torque to deliver. See the guide for more information.

For some inspiration, we've successfully driven this 3-DOF Robot Arm with the PiicoDev Servo Driver. While this requires three larger servos, the overall current demand is not excessive since the movements are smooth.

Technical Specifications

  • I2C Address: 0x44 (default) -> 0x47 (Reference the table on the back of the board)
  • Supply Voltage: 3.3 V
  • USB Supply Voltage: 5V
  • Dimensions: 52 x 25.4mm
  • Mounting Holes: 4x M2.5

PiicoDev Overview

PiicoDev is a ecosystem designed for rapid prototyping and maker education. The range includes:

Here are some of the features we have baked into PiicoDev:

  • Unified MicroPython libraries. The same MicroPython code examples will work on all supported platforms.
  • Simple-and-expandable connections. Modules can be connected using a 4-pin connector and daisy-chained to expand projects.
  • Breakout pins. Every module has a breakout section for optional advanced uses.
  • Consistent size. We have taken care to ensure modules are consistent sizes so that they easy for 3D printing cases, stacking and experimenting with.
  • Creative freedom. Simmer all of these features together and you end up with lots of creative freedom while still being a hands-on electronics experience.

PiicoDev electronics modules are designed and manufactured in Newcastle. They are priced for makers and education alike (affordable!). Get in touch with us if you have any questions.
