LoRa, short for Long Range, is a wireless communication method that is built upon ideas of low energy, long distances, noise immunity, and much more. As makers, we prefer to think of it as a wide area network (up to 40km line of sight) that provides internet access for machines and devices. Neat!
Every LoRaWAN network needs at least one gateway. Each gateway provides a "backhaul" to the internet, so that any connected devices can communicate with supported internet applications. In urban environments, a gateway every 3-5kms is generally fine. Outdoors, 5-10km. External antennas can help increase range.

LoRa nodes are the remote devices that can number in the thousands within a single area. Nodes typically have one or more recurring tasks, such as reading sensor values. That data is transmitted via LoRa to a gateway which can typically service 10,000+ nodes, all day long.

The best way to increase range for LoRa is to get your gateway antenna higher into the air. Often, this means an outdoor setup which also calls for an antenna that can endure that environment.
Increase your range with this 1/2 wave duck antenna. Designed for 860 to 960MHz it is ideal for distant LoRa nodes. Utilizes an RP-SMA connector and is 200mm long.
