Get Ready to Build a Roving Robot with the Pimoroni STS-Pi Kit!

5.... 4.... 3.... 2.... 1.... Blast off! With the Pimoroni STS-Pi kit, you can transform your Raspberry Pi into a spaceship, or rather, a roving robot that can roam free while taking some amazing pictures. The kit is a fantastic way to introduce yourself to robots and controlling motors with your Raspberry Pi, and it's suitable for both novice and experienced makers alike.

What's Included in the Kit?

  • A laser-cut chassis for the robot
  • A Raspberry Pi camera mount
  • Two super-grippy moon-buggy wheels
  • Two push header motors with a 298:1 gear ratio
  • A 0.5" front castor wheel
  • Jumper leads for easy wiring
  • Two motor mounting brackets to keep everything in place
  • Two battery clips (battery not included)
  • All nuts, bolts, and other fixings needed for assembly

With everything included in the kit, you won't need to worry about sourcing any additional parts.

Easy Assembly without Soldering

Unlike other robot kits, the Pimoroni STS-Pi chassis doesn't require any soldering. You can easily put everything together using only a small flat-head screwdriver, saving you time and effort. The kit is designed to work specifically with Pimoroni's Explorer HAT, Explorer HAT Pro, or Explorer pHAT boards. However, it can work with other motor drivers too, giving you the freedom to customise the robot according to your preferences.

A Versatile Robot for Programming Fun

After assembling the robot, you can program it using your favourite language. Whether you're a Python enthusiast or love the simplicity of Scratch, you can create your own programs to control the robot's movement, take pictures, and more. Plus, with a USB battery pack (not included) and a WiFi dongle, you can unleash the robot and let it roam free.

No Raspberry Pi? No Problem!

The Pimoroni STS-Pi kit doesn't include a Raspberry Pi, Raspberry Pi Camera, or Explorer HAT (Pro or pHAT), so you'll need to purchase them separately. However, once you have them, you're ready to build your own roving robot and take on the world of DIY electronics.

Video Tutorial

If you're still unsure about how to build the robot, check out this video tutorial by Connor Plant:

Connor Plant has created a build video.

Overall, the Pimoroni STS-Pi kit is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to get started with robotics and learn how to control motors with a Raspberry Pi. With the included camera mount, you can even take some amazing pictures while your robot is on the move. So why wait? Blast off and start building your roving robot today!
