It is best to only power your RPi by POE or USB-C, not both. If both are used, then the POE HAT may emit an audible tone (and eventually damage something).

There is a limit per customer; if you see a red error message then reduce the QTY and try again.

There have been reports that Ubiquiti Unifi POE can/will result in audible noise when using this device - there is no known workaround at this time.

The HighPi Pro Case accommodates the POE+ HAT nicely. Another alternative is the PoE HAT Case. The Official RPi Case is too small.

PoE+ is one of the best features added to Raspberry Pi boards and has found its way into digital signage, factory automation, and hobbyists projects. Pretty much anywhere reliable and secure data is needed, along with a no hassles power setup (one wire for ethernet and power).

Other features include:

  • Input (PoE): 37V-57V DC
  • Output: 5V @ 5Amp
  • Active cooling (brushless fan)
  • Compatible with the existing PoE HAT layout

The new design also has much better thermals. Here is a thermal image of the PoE+ HAT delivering 2.5Amps:
