If you're looking to level up your project, the Mega 2560 is a great place to start. It's based on the Atmega2560 chip which provides a huge number of IO pins and functionality:

  • 54 Digital Input/Output pins (14 with hardware PWM capability)
  • 16 Analogue Inputs
  • 4 UART ports
  • USB connectivity
  • ICSP header

Whilst being a much larger and more capable board, the Mega2560 still clocks at 16MHz, just like the Uno, which means it won't run faster than an Uno, but you do get a lot more functionality to use within those 16MHz. Something to note about the Mega2560 is the use of a 16U2 which is programmed as a USB-serial converter rather than a standalone FTDI chip as many previous Arduino® boards used.

This is the revision 3 model board which contains the following changes:

  • 1.0 pinout: added SDA and SCL pins that are near to the AREF pin and two other new pins placed near to the RESET pin, the IOREF that allow the shields to adapt to the voltage provided from the board. In future, shields will be compatible both with the board that use the AVR, which operate with 5V and with the Arduino® Due that operates with 3.3V. The second one is a not connected pin, that is reserved for future purposes.
  • Stronger RESET circuit.
  • Atmega 16U2 replaced the 8U2.

Tech Specs:

  • This board is a generic variant, built from the open source Arduino® Mega R3 design. It is a compatible replacement for the official Arduino® Mega, however, we recommend and guarantee that only the official variant will work with all Arduino® educational resources wherever it is referenced. Buying official also supports the creators and their future innovations.
  • Operating Voltage: 5V
  • Input Voltage (recommended): 7-12V
  • Input Voltage (limits): 6-20V
  • DC Current per I/O Pin: 40 mA
  • DC Current for 3.3V Pin: 50 mA
  • Flash Memory: 256 KB of which 8 KB used by bootloader
  • SRAM: 8 KB
  • EEPROM: 4 KB
  • Clock Speed: 16 MHz

What's in the Box:

  • Mega 2560 R3 Board
  • USB cable

  6. Review by Gregory verified purchaser

I purchased 2 of these and only received 1 USB cable. On one of the boards, all of the headers on one edge were bent through 90 degrees -- I was able to bend them back with no dramas. I will definitely buy again. (Posted on 17/09/2017)

This is great Arduino for ah-hoc projects, recommend the proto shield to go with it. (Posted on 4/05/2016)

  14. Review by Lian - just like the original verified purchaser

This Arduino Mega clone looks and works just like the original, at least for my purposes of running a modified version of the PulseAmped code for a pulse sensor and controlling leds using the PWM pins. Also great service by Core, for providing the more expensive Arduino when they ran out of stock on the clone, but did not charge me the full price. This meant I got the gear on time for a public event, so am very grateful. (Posted on 16/08/2014)

  15. Review by Nathan - Great buy verified purchaser

As a complete beginner in the world of electronics, I decided to purchase this clone rather than the much more expensive original, as I wasn't sure how well I would go with it.

The order arrived fast and was packaged well. Everything that I ordered was delivered exactly as shown on the site without any problems. Shopping online is a little hit and miss sometimes, so its nice to have a good experience.
