What's going to protect your beloved B+ Pi from an onslaught of rainbow-coloured fusion? That's right, it's the Unicorn HAT.

Sporting a matrix of 64 (8 x 8) RGB LEDs and powered directly from the Pi this is the most compact pocket aurora available.

Unicorn HAT provides a wash of controllable colour that is ideal for mood-lighting, 8x8 pixel art, persistence of vision effects, status indications, or just blasting colour into your surroundings.

  • 64 RGB LEDs (WS2812B)
  • Python API
  • Compatible with Raspberry Pi B+
  • EEPROM with Raspberry Pi HAT configuration details
  • LED data driven via DMA over PWM

You need a good 2A power supply for your Pi for Unicorn HAT to work. We recommendthe official Raspberry Pi power supply.

  • Warning: RGB LEDs are bright enough to cause eye pain, do not look at them directly when brightly lit. We recommend the use of a diffuser.
  • Compatibility (Audio): As the HAT uses the PWM hardware and GPIO18, it will interfere with analogue audio playback. HDMI should be just fine though! :D
  • Compatibility (Model B): HATs are only compatible with the newer B+ Raspberry Pi. They will not fit nicely on a B. You can hack it to work with a Model B though.
  • Compatibility (Pibow): The Unicorn HAT (and other HATs) now work just fine with our range of fine Pibows! If you have any problems getting a hat to fit, email our support ninjas for help and advice.
  • Photo-sensitivity warning: Flashing, strobing, and patterns of lights may cause epileptic seizures. Always take care and immediately stop using if you feel unwell (dizziness, nausea, affected vision, eye twitching, disorientation).

  • Rain Gauge Data Logger
  • Summary A Raspberry Pi 3B is used to collect digital counts from an electronic rain gauge (1mm of rain per reed switch closure by magnetic see-saw). It has been running without issues for over 12 months. A UPS powers the Pi so it is immune from short power glitches. The total count is displayed on an LCD screen with reset and inc/dec test buttons. “To HTML” and “To LCD” routines are also included to simp...
  • Television Media Centre
  • Introduction: I have a flat screen television that is about 7 years old that I purchased before Smart TVs were commonly available. What I wanted to achieve with My Pi project was to turn my slightly old TV into a media centre. I wanted to play music through my TV as well as play saved movies and stream internet content. It was important for me to be able to stream ABC iView and SBS On Demand as they provide a free service and ...
  • DIY Pi Buggy
  • The motivation behind this project came from a robotics and engineering club that I've been going to. I've been saving my money and building up an understanding of raspberry pi and electronics. The reason I chose this project was to get used to using motors and controlling different speeds. I am self taught as I am home schooled and my mum and dad (who are my teachers) don't understand how to use the raspberry pi! The project is...
  • Mass SD card Image Writer
  • We've built a mass SD card writer using a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, some USB hubs and SD card readers. This beast has enough ports to write 49 SD cards at once! At Core Electronics, sometimes logistics hang-ups mean that suppliers cannot meet our demand for pre-flashed SD cards. During these periods we have to pick up the slack by manually imaging blank SD cards we source ourselves. Of course, this is a super-tedious process, and ...

I really love these. Even though it is lower resolution than the HAT HD, these LEDs seem brighter. I wrote a script within 5 minutes to create a police flashing light that is perfect for a child's toy police car! (Posted on 8/10/2018)

Does what it says. Driver Installation process though is a bit opaque and probably overly complex. (Posted on 4/05/2017)
