A development board that provides a simple interface for the HMC5883L (three-axis magnetic field module).

  • Type: GY-271
  • 3V to 5V operating voltage
  • Uses I2C communication protocol
  • Measurment range:  ± 1.3-8 Gauss

We've been informed by customers of changes to the chipset on some of these breakout boards where they feature the Chinese clone of the HMC5883L: QMC5883. Whilst intended as a drop-in replacement, they require some tweaking to the code in order to function correctly due to some register and I2C address changes.

Here is the datasheet for the QMC5883 and there's also a functioning Arduino library for the QMC variant which can be found here.

    I bought this magnetometer to use as an external compass for my APM 2.5 board. I can now place the compass well away from any magnetic interference to get more accurate readings. (Posted on 10/12/2013)

    This compass is so small but its real easy to use. Just connect to your arduino board, download the library and thats it.

    I have only perform the basic test and as long as you keep metal items away for it, its great. Will soon be using it to drive an arduino car around the house. (Posted on 19/04/2013)
