The software that I'll be using during this course is Atom (with the gpp-compiler package installed) and MinGW on Windows. I'll be showing you how to set up and use these, as well as how to compile your programs on a Raspberry Pi if you want to (HINT: everything you need is already installed).

To set up your computer for writing C programs, you'll need to follow a few steps. First, access the guide associated with this video, which contains links to the necessary software. Begin by downloading Atom, your text editor. Simply click the download button; it should automatically detect your operating system, such as Windows. Once the download is complete, run the installer. Atom installs itself, and after installation, it will open automatically. For now, you can minimize it, as we'll return to it later. Next, you'll need MinGW, which will serve as your compiler. Open the provided link and find the download installer button on the right-hand side. Click it, wait for the download to finish, and then run the installer. You'll first encounter the license agreement; just click install. You can choose a different installation location, but the default is usually fine. Click continue and wait for the download to complete. Once downloaded, click continue to open the installer.

In the installer, select the checkmark next to MinGW 32-base by left-clicking it, then click mark for installation. Navigate to the installation menu at the top and click apply changes. The installer will list the packages that need to be installed. Click apply and wait for the installation to finish. If everything goes smoothly, a message will confirm that all changes were applied successfully. You can then close the installer. Now, open Atom again and navigate to file, then settings. Scroll down to install and search for GPP-compiler. Press enter to search, and click the install button next to the GPP compiler. Wait for the installation to complete, and you should be ready to go. When writing C programs, you can simply hit the run button, and it will execute your code. If you're using a Raspberry Pi, the process is simpler, as all necessary tools are pre-installed. Just go to the menu, select programming, and choose Genie. To run your C programs, click the run button at the top, and it will function similarly to Atom.

Finally, there's one more step with MinGW involving a setting change in Windows. Open the start menu and search for "edit environment variables for your account." Press enter, select the path variable in the top box, and click edit. Click new, then browse. Locate the installation directory for MinGW, and inside it, find the bin folder. Select the bin folder, click OK, and then click OK two more times to finalize the changes. With these steps completed, your setup for writing and running C programs should be fully operational.
