Pulse Sensor Amped is a greatly improved version of the original Pulse Sensor, a plug-and-play heart-rate sensor for Arduino and Arduino compatibles. It can be used by students, artists, athletes, makers, and game & mobile developers who want to easily incorporate live heart-rate data into their projects.

Pulse Sensor Amped adds amplification and noise cancellation circuitry to the hardware. It's noticeably faster and easier to get reliable pulse readings. Pulse Sensor Amped works with either a 3V or 5V Arduino.

Lastly, the Pulse Sensor creators have also streamlined and improved the Processing visualization software and Arduino code that comes with this hardware.

The kit includes:

  • A 24-inch Color-Coded Cable, with a standard male header connectors. Plug it straight into an Arduino or a Breadboard. No soldering is required.
  • An Ear Clip, perfectly sized to the sensor. It can be hot-glued or epoxied to the back of the sensor to get reading from an ear lobe.
  • Parts to make a handy Velcro finger strap. This is another great way to get heart-rate data.
  • 4 Transparent Stickers, to insulate the front of the Pulse Sensor from oily fingers and sweaty earlobes.
  • The Pulse Sensor has 3 holes around the outside edge which make it easy to sew it into almost anything.
  • Visualization software (made in Processing) to instantly see output of the sensor and for troubleshooting.

    A basic heartbeat sensor - this is fundamentally an analogue op-amp circuit, nothing more. Good documentation from sensor designers. All calculations are done in software on your MCU via ISRs though, which requires some planning code-wise. Especially if you want to sense HB and do something else simultaneously on basic MCUs.     I purchased 12 of these for a recent project. All of the ones available here and the remainder from the US.

    This is not a good product but it was the only one available to non invasively read the pulse of members of the public and did not require sterilisation.

    The price is excessive for the components. It works by outputting a normalised analogues wave form and relies on an arduino to do all of the processing.

    The library is terrible. Its constant interrupts prevent any decent amount of processing capable on an Arduino Uno or Mega. I got around this by using an Arduino Due with an 84MHz clock and rewriting the library. There is a special library for the Due because the interrupt timing functions are different on the Atmel SAM3X8E chip but it is just as useless.

    My advice is to get rid of the interrupts and calculate the IBI (inter-beat-interval) by IBI = currentMillis - LastBeatMilllis. It won't run 500 times a second but it will allow you run other functions. The basic math functions for analysing the peaks and troughs are good.

    The processing sketch wouldn't run on my computer. I had to return to much earlier builds.

    If you want to see how poorly this product is supported just check how many replies there are versus questions on the forum.

    Thanks again to Core Electronics for being able to supply it so quickly. I had a really tight time frame to complete this job.

    In summary its a terrible, overpriced, poorly supported product but i can't find anything else that does what it does. Lets hope someone make a better one. (Posted on 21/03/2014)
