Add touch and proximity sensing to your Raspberry Pi with the Pi Cap!
The Pi Cap is an easy-to-attach to add-on board that brings capacitive sensing to your Raspberry Pi projects. It features 12 capacitive electrodes that can be used as touch or distance sensors. Extend each of these electrodes with Electric Paint or other conductive materials to create sensors on a wide range of substrates.
In addition to 12 capacitive sensors, the Pi Cap has a 3.5mm audio jack, multi-function button, user-programmable RBG LED, and a prototyping area with GPIO breakout. It comes with example code and libraries written in C++, Python, and Node.js.
The Pi Cap is compatible with any Raspberry Pi that has a 40 pin GPIO connector, including the latest Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi Zero W. It gives you capacitive touch, distance sensing and high-quality audio output to your next Pi Project. Similarly to other boards with capacitive touch, you can connect anything conductive (conductive paint, copper tape, wire and more).
12 high-resolution capacitive electrodes
The Pi Cap uses the MPR121 to create 12 capacitive electrodes. You can program the electrodes as a touch or proximity sensors, and extend them using Electric Paint or other conductive materials. Use the electrodes to create sensors on a wide range of substrates, from walls, floors and tabletops to textiles or paper.
Use with Raspberry Pi and Pi Zero
The Pi Cap works both with the Raspberry Pi and the Pi Zero. This means that you can use all of the Raspberry Pi’s features for your capacitive sensing project, like WiFi or Bluetooth. Use it alongside Electric Paint to draw or print a sensor and wirelessly trigger an output.

Setup
The software packages for this HAT are listed in the default Raspberry Pi repositories, meaning that you can install them with a simple one-liner in the terminal.
Setup for the Pi 3 Model B+: sudo apt-get install picap
Setup for the Pi Zero Boards: sudo apt-get install picap
That's all it takes to get going, just install the HAT and run the software setup. Now you've got the Pi Cap HAT ready to use.
