How to log measurements using a Mooshimeter

Updated 05 February 2017

The Mooshimeter is one of our favorite multimeters here at Core Electronics! If you haven't heard about them before, then take a quick look at our review. One of the most popular features of the Mooshimeter is the ability to log voltage/amperage reading to a local SD Card. You can set logging intervals (1 second to 1 minute) and any data reading present from your Mooshimeter will be stored as a CSV spreadsheet on the SD card. It's a great way to monitor projects over the course of a few hours or even days. The setup process to get your Mooshimeter logging is very straightforward, we are going to walk you through it and show you just how simple it is. You'll need any SD or SDHC microSD card, an Android or Apple device capable of connecting to your Mooshimeter and a Phillips head screwdriver to get your Mooshimeter logging data.

First, we need to prepare our SD card for logging. As the Mooshimeter can only log data to SD cards that are formatted using the FAT32 filesystem, it's a safe bet to reformat your SD card before proceeding. Grab your SD card out and make sure you have an SD or SDHC card (<=32GB in size is critical). Plug your SD card into your PC and navigate to the Windows Explorer file view. Once here, you can right-click on your SD card under the "This PC" option in the left-hand window. Select the format option in the Right click options menu. Once here, change the drop-down box labeled "Filesystem" to FAT32. Now select the start button at the bottom of that window. If you are running Linux or Mac operating systems, a quick google search for formatting SD cards will net you a ton of results. That's all you need to do to make sure the SD card can be written to by your Mooshimeter!

The next step is going to make use of your trusty Phillips head screwdriver. Take out your Mooshimeter (I assume your meter is out of shipping mode and ready to go with the latest firmware), and turn it on its face.

Remove the two screws holding the case together.

Remove the bottom half of the plastic case, and locate the SD Card slot under the batteries on the Voltage/Current terminal side of the PCB.

Insert your newly formatted SD card, push it into the slot until it clicks into place. Removal of the SD card from your meter will require you to push the SD card again and it will release it.

Replace the back cover of the case and screws holding it together.

Now we will head to our Mooshimeter app on our Smartphone. It's always worth making sure you are running the most recent version of any software we talk about in our tutorials, at the time of writing this Article I am using Mooshimeter version 1.10 for iPhone.

Connect to your Mooshimeter and select the Logging option from the menu system.

Here we are taken to a settings page for our Logging preferences:

  • Log Status - This field indicates if there is a valid SD card present or not. If this reading says "OK" you're good to go.
  • Logging Enable - You can enable disable logging with the slider beside Logging enable. This option can be set so you are always logging data if there is an SD card present.
  • Logging interval - You can select an interval at which to log data to the SD card. The options present in this menu are 1 second, 10 seconds, 60 seconds or MAX. Max refers to as many logs as possible, it will cause the meter to continuously sample and log data.

Transferring your Log files over BLE

Below the generic logging settings in the Mooshimeter application, you will see a box labeled "Load Logs". If you select this option, the application will retrieve the numbered list of logs present on your SD card, named numerically with time/date stamps. If you select one of these files from the list, you will be prompted to an email screen, where you can email a copy of the log file. The file will be sent as a .csv (comma separated values) file that is compatible with all spreadsheet applications.

See! Moosh.im have made it so easy to log and transfer logs over BLE with your Mooshimeter. Now you know how to set your meter up for logging data as well as email that data anywhere you need it. If you have any further questions about data logging on the Mooshimeter be sure to let us know, we're here to help!
