Raspberry Pi Foundation is always coy with its board revisions so let us zoom in and unravel the mystery.

Hey gang, Tim here for Electronics and today I will identify exactly the revision number of a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B board. After the release of the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (1GB, 2GB, and 4GB), there was a hardware design revision. The new revision enables full compatibility with all smart USB-C cables, so if you have any other Raspberry Pi boards in your hands, this design revision won't affect you at all.

Side note: if you have the schmick new Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 8GB and you're curious as to what the revision number is, all of them are 1.4. Now, the particular number of revision is not written directly on any Raspberry Pi board, so to be able to figure it out, there are two main ways: either physically by looking closely at the hardware attached to the surface of the board, or virtually by typing a command into the Raspbian terminal.

On the table with me is a Revision 1.1 and a Revision 1.2 board. Now let's take a real close look at these and play a bit of spot the difference. Now, as you can see on the top left of this CPU, there's two little resistors here, whereas on the top left of this CPU there is a little IC board (integrated circuit). Now if I flip the boards over, looking in close once again, you can see here there isn't anything, but over here there's this tiny little transistor. If I jump over here, this transistor has been moved to this location. There are also several other smaller differences, but these two things are the big telltales.

Now if I jump into the computer and go to the online writer link in description, you can see an image of these two boards which highlight every single hardware change between these two revisions. Here are the ones I identified before, here are some of the smaller ones. So, having done it physically, now let me demonstrate how to identify the revision virtually. I'm going to do this...

If this is your first foray into the world of microprocessors, we have a whole bunch of tutorials to get you from zero to hero on our Core Electronics website. If you go through these guides, what I'm about to do will seem very, very intuitive. So now, noobs has booted up and we have the Raspbian OS. I'm going to open up the Raspbian terminal using the black button near the top left on the top task bar. By clicking this, I'm then going to drag it out a little bit and I'm also going to zoom in once, twice, three times so it's easier for you, the viewer at home.

What we're going to do is type the following: "cat /proc/cpuinfo" pressing enter you'll see a whole bunch of text and most crucially the revision 1.1. And that is how you can find the revision number virtually.

So why was there a revision change? Let me first state that none of the earlier revisions are dangerous. The new revision is there to enable you to connect and power the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with absolutely any kind of USB-C cord. Before this revision, some USB-C cables, often those used by Apple Macbooks and other high-end laptops, would not correctly identify the Raspberry Pi boards.

Now if you want to write up of this video, check it out Corelectronics.com. Also, if you happen to be holding a Raspberry Pi board and you're not quite sure what type it is, then we have guides there for you to help you identify it quick snap.
