The Model B+ uses the same BCM2835 application processor as the Model B. It runs the same software, and still has 512MB RAM; but the Raspberry Pi team have made the following key improvements:

  • More GPIO. The GPIO header has grown to 40 pins, while retaining the same pinout for the first 26 pins as the Model B.
  • More USB. There are now 4 USB 2.0 ports, compared to 2 on the Model B, and better hotplug and overcurrent behaviour.
  • Micro SD. The old friction-fit SD card socket has been replaced with a much nicer push-push micro SD version.
  • Lower power consumption. By replacing linear regulators with switching ones they've reduced power consumption by between 0.5W and 1W (the B+ board now uses less power (600mA) than the Model B Board (750mA) when running).
  • Better audio. The audio circuit incorporates a dedicated low-noise power supply.
  • Neater form factor. Aligned the USB connectors with the board edge, moved composite video onto the 3.5mm jack, and added four squarely-placed mounting holes.

Please note: The Raspberry Pi Model B+ has a different layout to the previous Raspberry Pis which means existing enclosures / daughter boards may not fit.

It'll bootstrap its own go-lang compiler in about 10 minutes (the last time I had to bootstrap a compiler on a PC, it took 18 hours)

This is the perfect little gadget for schools. Learning to drive the GPIO is remarkably easy in Python.

I am using an RPi B+ as a media player (with XBMC) and it works well. The default speed is a little slow, but with some simple text file editing (and some heatsinks) you can overclock it to 1GHz+. (Posted on 20/09/2014)

Wanting to get my own raspberry pi for some time. When the new model came out it was the perfect time to take the plunge.

After downloading the latest noobs package it only took a short time to have it up and running. Easy to get the hang of and writing apps to use the GPIOs is not as hard as i thought it would be.

Highly recommend to anyone whonis looking at getting into rasppi or upgrading from the previous model. Extra usb ports is handy.

Cheers core electronics! (Posted on 3/08/2014)
