## Description

The SparkFun M71690X-16S Audio Player Breakout is a compact serial-controlled audio player designed around the MY1690X-16S decoder that supports both .WAV and .MP3 audio files played from a connected microSD card formatted to FAT16 or FAT32. The board includes a USB-C connector to mount it as a removable USB drive on a connected computer, a µSD card slot for connecting a compatible SD card, and a 3.5mm TRRS connector for headphone audio output. Controlling the MY1690X-16S over serial does require a USB-to-UART conversion, so a development board like the [RedBoard Plus](https://www.sparkfun.com/sparkfun-redboard-plus.html) is required.

The MY1690X-16S operates over a serial-UART interface at 3.3V TTL using a command set to control audio playback (Play, Pause, Next, etc.), volume and equalizer settings, and query statuses (SD card contents, track name/length, etc.). We've written an Arduino library that simplifies this to a simple interactive text menu for all available commands to control the Audio Player Breakout with an Arduino development board.

When plugged in over USB, the MY1690X-16S automatically mounts as a removable USB drive to transfer and view audio files to a connected microSD card. However, our testing found the transfer speed to be fairly limited. Sparkfun recommend loading large audio files directly to the microSD card using a USB reader or plugging the card directly into an SD card port on a computer.

The board's audio output is powerful enough to work well with headphones but requires an amplifier for output on larger speakers.
