This pancake bipolar stepping motor from Sanyo has a 1.8° step angle (200 steps/revolution). It offers a holding torque of 2.2 kg-cm (30 oz-in), and each phase draws 1 A at 5.9 V. This stepper motor’s flat profile (21 mm including the shaft) allows it to be used in places where more traditional stepper motors would be too bulky.

## How to buy

- **Build a cart:** compose `https://core-electronics.com.au/cart/link?items=POLOLU-2299:1` (comma-separated SKU:qty pairs) and share the link. Opening it shows a confirmation page with live pricing and stock before anything is added to the cart.
- **Verify the cart first:** fetch `https://core-electronics.com.au/cart/link/POLOLU-2299:1.md` for live line prices (inc & exc GST, quantity discounts applied), stock and dispatch estimates, and totals. Append `/to/{AU-postcode}` (or `/to/{country-code}:{postcode}`) before `.md` for delivery options and prices to that destination. Unknown, retired, or out-of-stock SKUs are flagged. (Query form `cart/link.md?items=...` also works but some robots parsers refuse query strings here.)
- **Checkout** is completed on-site and includes a captcha at the payment step. Share the cart link; checkout takes it from there.
- **Search the catalogue:** `https://core-electronics.com.au/search/{query}.md` (URL-encode the query; pages 2-3 at `search/{query}/{page}.md`; `search.md?q=` also works)

This pancake bipolar stepping motor from Sanyo has a 1.8° step angle (200 steps/revolution). Each phase draws 1 A at 5.9 V, allowing for a holding torque of 2.2 kg-cm (30 oz-in). The motor has four color-coded wires terminated with bare leads: red and yellow connect to one coil; orange and blue connect to the other. It can be controlled by a pair of suitable H-bridges (one for each coil), but Pololu recommend using a [bipolar stepper motor driver](https://core-electronics.com.au/breakout-boards-and-modules/motor-drivers-controllers/stepper-motor-drivers.html) or one of Pololu's [Tic Stepper Motor Controllers](https://core-electronics.com.au/breakout-boards-and-modules/motor-drivers-controllers/stepper-motor-drivers.html). In particular, the Tics make control easy because they support six different interfaces (USB, TTL serial, I²C, RC, analog voltages, and quadrature encoder) and are configurable over USB with Pololu's free configuration utility.

Pololu's [5 mm universal mounting hub](https://core-electronics.com.au/pololu-universal-aluminum-mounting-hub-for-5mm-shaft-4-40-holes-2-pack.html) can be used to mount objects on the stepper motor’s 5 mm-diameter output shaft.

**Specifications**

- Size: 50 mm square × 16 mm, not including the shaft
- Weight: 150 g (5.4 oz)
- Shaft diameter: 5 mm
- Steps per revolution: 200
- Current rating: 1 A per coil
- Voltage rating: 5.9 V
- Resistance: 5.9 O per coil
- Holding torque: 2.2 kg-cm (30 oz-in)
- Inductance: 3.2 mH per coil

More specifications are available in the datasheet (352k pdf).

**Dimensions**

The following diagram shows the stepper motor dimensions in mm. The dimension labeled “L” is 16 mm. Though the dimension diagram below shows output shafts on both sides, this stepper motor only has a single output shaft (on the side with the mounting plate) with a length of 5 mm and a diameter of 5 mm. This shaft works with Pololu's [5 mm universal mounting hub](https://core-electronics.com.au/pololu-universal-aluminum-mounting-hub-for-5mm-shaft-4-40-holes-2-pack.html).

**Stepper Motor Applications**

Stepper motors are generally used in a variety of applications where precise position control is desirable and the cost or complexity of a feedback control system is unwarranted. Here are a few applications where stepper motors are often found:

- Printers
- CNC machines
- 3D printer/prototyping machines (e.g. RepRap)
- Laser cutters
- Pick and place machines
- Linear actuators
- Hard drives

**Note:** Sanyo Denki originally called this product the “SANMOTION F2 stepping motor model SS2502-5041”, but as of October 2014, they are transitioning to using the new part number SS2502-8040 or SS2502-8040P. This is only a part number change; the product itself is exactly the same.
