What happens when a powerful 120Mhz ARM Cortex processor is combined with 3G Cellular data capabilities and paired with the world's most intuitive and capable cloud-based programming environment? You get the Particle Electron!
That's right, the Electron board features the same amazing spec sheet as found on the Photon, but with almost double the GPIO pins. The Electron will work out of the box in almost any country thanks to the incredible soft-sim network that the kind folks over at Particle.io have setup and you can program, communicate with and monitor your Electron no matter where it is, from anywhere in the world! Because the Electron is a cellular board, your kit includes the microSim that you need to get started with it, and data usage and rates are accessible from the Particle console.
The Particle.io IDE is based on the same coding abstraction as Arduino which makes it easy for new coders to get started, and the fully fleshed C++ language gives enough power and flexibility for any project! Check out some of the Electron tech specs:
- 3G Cellular connectivity
- STM32F205 ARM Cortex M3 processor
- 120Mhz clock speed
- 1MB flash memory
- 128KB RAM
- UART, JTAG, I2C, SPI, ADC, DAC, CAN and USB hardware peripherals
- 3.3V operating voltage
- GSM-only device (not CDMA)
- This Electron 3G Kit is for Australia / America (850/1900 MHz)
Particle's 1MB monthly data plan:
- $2.99/month for 1MB (thousands of messages)
- No contracts, cancel anytime. $0.99/each additional MB
All of this seamlessly integrates with Particle.io which has a fully fledged cloud-based IDE to program your board Over-the-Air (OTA), monitor your devices and logs, plus intuitively integrate webhooks and IoT services. With official support for channels like IFTTT, the Electron is truly in a class of its own. It connects to your computer/power via microUSB and also has exposed Vin pins for use with external power supplies and batteries.
The Particle cloud is designed to be simple and intuitive enough for DIY enthusiasts and makers, yet powerful and highly integrated to be the next platform of choice for startups and big businesses alike. For more info on the Photon and it's cloud functionality, check out the Particle docs.

So you’ve got your Particle Photon or Electron, you’ve got your sensors and external components and you’re ready to build an IoT device to make the world your slave. But hang on a minute, the sensor you have only operates on 5V an...
- Create a Smartphone App for Particle Without Coding
By now you’re probably loving the platform that is Particle and all these crazy ideas of how to create the next big IoT thing (Internet of Things thing…hmm), but for many inventors, the stumbling block is integrating your creation, with ...
- Remote Sensing with Particle Electron
Hey guys, how much fun are microcontrollers? They’re your own miniature slave to do your bidding in whatever way you choose, however as fun and all as using them to do math and crunching numbers, the real joy is seeing them interact with the ou...
- Working with the Particle IDE
In case you haven’t heard, the Internet of Things (IoT) is upon us. More and more devices everyday are being connected to the internet to communicate to people and other devices. Particle have seen the DIY/maker community’s desire for eas...
- Character Displays with Particle
Crunching numbers is fine, but sometimes you really need to visualise what’s going on in the tiny brain of your Photon. There are numerous different ways to visualise data or text on a microcontroller from binary LEDs, to HDMI displays, however...
- IoT House
These days we can do just about anything on our phone, we can control so many aspects of our lives using the technology in our pocket, but the most mundane aspects of our lives; opening the garage door, blindly reaching for the light switch in the dark, opening the front door when we get home, still relies on manual interaction. So I created the Particle IoT House, which contains servo motors to open and close the front and gara...
- IOT Shed
The driver behind this project is to allow the remote control of some of the equipment in my shed. I have a CNC router/laser cutter that uses my compressor and dust extractor whilst it is running, and well whats the point in having a computer comtrolled machine if you have to hang around and turn the other auxiliary bits on and off?!? There are a million ways to skin a cat, and the same is true about this project. However after ...
- IoT Mailbox
Getting letters and parcels is awesome, what’s not so awesome though is when you miss the postman and you don’t know if that important bit of mail arrived or not. Such a frustrating, yet mundane problem can be solved by creating an Internet of Things mailbox!...
