The Particle Photon is seriously amazing. You're looking at a board less than 3.6cm x 2cm that packs Wi-Fi connectivity, a powerful ARM Cortex 32-bit processor, enough connectivity and peripherals for the most advanced project, plus complete integration with the most advanced cloud-based user environment! That's right, the folks from Particle (formerly Spark) are back, and they've upped the microcontroller game in a way that few can compete with. The cloud IDE is based on Wiring which means it can be programmed with the same, easy to use code abstraction as Arduino, with the power and flexibility of C++.

So what makes the Photon so amazing? Let's look at some of the tech specs which are packed into this byte sized board:

  • 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • Broadcom MCB43362 Wi-Fi controller
  • STM32F205 ARM Cortex M3 processor
  • 120Mhz clock speed
  • 1MB flash memory
  • 128KB RAM
  • 18 GPIO pins
  • UART, JTAG, I2C, SPI, ADC, DAC, CAN and USB hardware peripherals
  • 3.3V operating voltage

All of this seamlessly integrates with Particle.io which has a fully fledged cloud-based IDE to program your board Over-the-Air (OTA), monitor your devices and logs, plus intuitively integrate webhooks and IoT services. With official support for channels like IFTTT, the Photon is truly in a class of its own. It connects to your computer/power via microUSB and also has exposed Vin pins for use with external power supplies and batteries.

The Particle cloud is designed to be simple and intuitive enough for DIY enthusiasts and makers, yet powerful and highly integrated to be the next platform of choice for startups and big businesses alike. For more info on the Photon and it's cloud functionality, check out the Particle docs.

This Photon comes with pre-soldered male headers to make it even easier to use with your next project. For awesome project ideas for your Photon, check out our Projects and Tutorials.

  • Infinity-Mirror Table
  • An infinity mirror creates a striking optical illusion - a tunnel of light that seems to tear through space. I built this infinity-mirror table using some addressable LEDs, a Particle Photon and easily obtainable timber supplies. Check out the video to see the table in action! If you have any questions about building your own Infinity-Mirror Table then jump down to the comments section at the bottom of this page. If you have an...
  • IoT Plant Monitor
  • So, my wife wanted to have some small plants in the house. I didn’t, so we compromised, and got some plants. The only thing is that neither of us remembers to water them, so I wanted to build a sensor array to monitor the moisture content of the soil, and notify us when they needed watering. We’ve got 3 plants, all fairly close to each other, and I wanted to create an IoT project so that it could send an email notifi...
  • IOT Shed
  • The driver behind this project is to allow the remote control of some of the equipment in my shed. I have a CNC router/laser cutter that uses my compressor and dust extractor whilst it is running, and well whats the point in having a computer comtrolled machine if you have to hang around and turn the other auxiliary bits on and off?!? There are a million ways to skin a cat, and the same is true about this project. However after ...
  • IoT Mailbox
  • Getting letters and parcels is awesome, what’s not so awesome though is when you miss the postman and you don’t know if that important bit of mail arrived or not. Such a frustrating, yet mundane problem can be solved by creating an Internet of Things mailbox!...
  • IoT House
  • These days we can do just about anything on our phone, we can control so many aspects of our lives using the technology in our pocket, but the most mundane aspects of our lives; opening the garage door, blindly reaching for the light switch in the dark, opening the front door when we get home, still relies on manual interaction. So I created the Particle IoT House, which contains servo motors to open and close the front and gara...

Handy little board with some great features, but maybe a little expensive for an Arduino. (Posted on 12/09/2017)

great stuff! setup is easy and support is huge. the hardware is well done, but I don't like the poor IDE with much less functionality than even the Arduino IDE. I'm sure it will improve 10/10 for the concept and potential. Core Electronics shipped fast and pricing was best I could find.

Feedback from Core Electronics - Cheers John! Bear in mind the IDE is just one itty-bitty element of what makes Particle, you only see what you "need" to see in the IDE. The whole cloud based ecosystem extends past other platforms by miles (or perhaps "galaxies" would be better suited for some comparisons) (Posted on 20/06/2017)

Initial setup was easy and went well, but have since struggled with the Particle Web and Desktop IDE. The hardware is good, the concept is great, the potential is massive, but I'm not a fan of the software which your forced to use. (Posted on 19/04/2017)

The Particle Photon is the perfect device for building internet enabled devices as it has Wi-Fi connectivity and firmware code (Arduino compatible) is compiled and synced to the cloud. Community support is great and there is a ton of libraries that help developing code a breeze. (Posted on 30/03/2017)

The Particle Photon is simply one of the best IoT devices ever invented in my opinion. I found the coding a little more complicated than Arduino, but once I got used to it I was away. An incredibly versatile must-have for any DIYer. (Posted on 14/03/2017)

This is a great little unit. I've been introducing it to my electronics students and we're designing a pet dog feeder that is controlled from your mobile phone. The online support is excellent too. (Posted on 7/10/2016)

Mind blown. The photon is so much better than an Arduino it's not funny.
Coding is very similar to the Arduino, but the photon platform is way better with WIFI out of the box, OTA flashing, 120Mhz processor... The list goes on.
The only downside is the limited IO pins, but nothing some I2C IO expanders won't fix. (Posted on 19/07/2016)
