The Leonardo is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega32u4. It has 20 digital input/output pins (of which 7 can be used as PWM outputs and 12 as analog inputs), a 16 MHz crystal oscillator, a micro USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button. It contains everything needed to support the microcontroller; simply connect it to a computer with a USB cable or power it with a AC-to-DC adapter or battery to get started.

## Description

The Leonardo is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega32u4 ([datasheet](https://core-electronics.com.au/attachments/localcontent/7766S_856002822a7.pdf)). It has 20 digital input/output pins (of which 7 can be used as PWM outputs and 12 as analog inputs), a 16 MHz crystal oscillator, a micro USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button. It contains everything needed to support the microcontroller; simply connect it to a computer with a USB cable or power it with a AC-to-DC adapter or battery to get started.

The Leonardo differs from all preceding boards in that the ATmega32u4 has built-in USB communication, eliminating the need for a secondary processor. This allows the Leonardo to appear to a connected computer as a mouse and keyboard, in addition to a virtual (CDC) serial / COM port. **This board is a generic variant**, built from the open source Arduino® Leonardo design. It is a compatible replacement for the [official Arduino® Leonardo](https://core-electronics.com.au/arduino-leonardo.html), however, we recommend and guarantee that only the official variant will work with all Arduino® educational resources wherever it is referenced. ### Programming

The Leonardo can be programmed with the Arduino® software (download). Select "Arduino® Leonardo from the **Tools &gt; Board** menu (according to the microcontroller on your board). For details, see the reference and tutorials.

The ATmega32U4 on the Leonardo comes preburned with a bootloader that allows you to upload new code to it without the use of an external hardware programmer. It communicates using the AVR109 protocol.
