# Leonardo

**Type:** Product page · **SKU:** CE05099 · **Brand:** [Core Electronics](https://core-electronics.com.au/brands/core-electronics-australia)
**Page:** https://core-electronics.com.au/leonardo-arduino-compatible.html ([markdown](https://core-electronics.com.au/leonardo-arduino-compatible.html.md))

The Leonardo is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega32u4. It has 20 digital input/output pins (of which 7 can be used as PWM outputs and 12 as analog inputs), a 16 MHz crystal oscillator, a micro USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button. It contains everything needed to support the microcontroller; simply connect it to a computer with a USB cable or power it with a AC-to-DC adapter or battery to get started.

## Pricing

- **Price:** $11.30 (inc GST) — $10.27 AUD, exc GST
- **Quantity discounts:** 10+ $9.25 (exc GST) · 50+ $8.73 (exc GST)

## Availability & dispatch

- In stock, ships same business day if ordered before 2PM (Australia/Sydney).
- We can dispatch 16 today; more stock is typically available with a 8–12 day lead time.

## How to buy

- **Build a cart:** compose `https://core-electronics.com.au/cart/link?items=CE05099:1` (comma-separated SKU:qty pairs) and share the link. Opening it shows a confirmation page with live pricing and stock before anything is added to the cart.
- **Verify the cart first:** fetch `https://core-electronics.com.au/cart/link/CE05099:1.md` for live line prices (inc & exc GST, quantity discounts applied), stock and dispatch estimates, and totals. Append `/to/{AU-postcode}` (or `/to/{country-code}:{postcode}`) before `.md` for delivery options and prices to that destination. Unknown, retired, or out-of-stock SKUs are flagged. (Query form `cart/link.md?items=...` also works but some robots parsers refuse query strings here.)
- **Checkout** is completed on-site and includes a captcha at the payment step. Share the cart link; checkout takes it from there.
- **Search the catalogue:** `https://core-electronics.com.au/search/{query}.md` (URL-encode the query; pages 2-3 at `search/{query}/{page}.md`; `search.md?q=` also works)
- **Payment methods, purchase orders, policies and contact details:** https://core-electronics.com.au/llms.txt
## Description

The Leonardo is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega32u4 ([datasheet](https://core-electronics.com.au/attachments/localcontent/7766S_856002822a7.pdf)).

The Leonardo differs from all preceding boards in that the ATmega32u4 has built-in USB communication, eliminating the need for a secondary processor. This allows the Leonardo to appear to a connected computer as a mouse and keyboard, in addition to a virtual (CDC) serial / COM port. It also has other implications for the behavior of the board; these are detailed on the getting started page.

**This board is a generic variant**, built from the open source Arduino® Leonardo design. It is a compatible replacement for the [official Arduino® Leonardo](https://core-electronics.com.au/arduino-leonardo.html), however, we recommend and guarantee that only the official variant will work with all Arduino® educational resources wherever it is referenced. Buying official also supports the creators and their future innovations.

### Summary

| Microcontroller | ATmega32u4 |
|---|---|
| Operating Voltage | 5V |
| Input Voltage (recommended) | 7-12V |
| Input Voltage (limits) | 6-20V |
| Digital I/O Pins | 20 |
| PWM Channels | 7 |
| Analog Input Channels | 12 |
| DC Current per I/O Pin | 40 mA |
| DC Current for 3.3V Pin | 50 mA |
| Flash Memory | 32 KB (ATmega32u4) of which 4 KB used by bootloader |
| SRAM | 2.5 KB (ATmega32u4) |
| EEPROM | 1 KB (ATmega32u4) |
| Clock Speed | 16 MHz |

### Programming

The Leonardo can be programmed with the Arduino® software (download). Select "Arduino® Leonardo from the **Tools > Board** menu (according to the microcontroller on your board). For details, see the reference and tutorials.

The ATmega32U4 on the Leonardo comes preburned with a bootloader that allows you to upload new code to it without the use of an external hardware programmer. It communicates using the AVR109 protocol.

You can also bypass the bootloader and program the microcontroller through the ICSP (In-Circuit Serial Programming) header; see these instructions for details.

Arduino® is a trademark of Arduino AG.
