Ever dreamed of having a robot do your homework? Or have you longed for a robot that could clean your messy desk. Well that might still be a little way off yet, but uArm is definitely a step in the right direction.
uArm is essentially a scaled down version of an industrial robot arm. It uses a 4-axis parallel mechanism, similar to that of a full sized packing robot, which gives the arm a very impressive range of movement. The uArm is comprised of laser cut acrylic (or wood) and is actuated by a couple of standard hobby servos.
The possibilities with it are endless. Combine the arm with a mobile chassis to create a robot that could go around and clean up your room. Put a web camera on it and use openCV to sort your favourite candy sweets by colour or you could even get the uArm to play an instrument.
The creators of uArm have written a Windows application that allows the arm to be controlled via keyboard and mouse or even a Wii nunchuck. They offer various end effectors including the typical claw style gripper and even a suction cup with a vacuum pump.
The uArm is a very versatile creation that I can’t wait to see what people do with it.
