This board is the latest revision of the Raspberry Pi board, packing the same punch as the Raspberry Pi 3 B+, on a smaller footprint. For the first time ever, this Model A+ board also has the beefy WiFi chip from the Model B+. This is the perfect board if you're looking for the power of the B+ with less power usage.

  • The Brains - 64-bit SOC @ 1.4GHz - Using the same Broadcomm BCM2837B0 as it's brother board, the processor is a tried and tested option for maker projects.
  • The Memory - 512MB LPDDR2 SDRAM - A slight downgrade from the B+, 512MB is more than enough for most projects.
  • Connectivity - 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi & Bluetooth - Using the same specs as it's brother board, the A+ comes with 802.11.b/g/n/ac AND Bluetooth 4.2/BLE. That means your IoT projects can be tackled with this board.
  • Interfacing with Maker Gear - 40 Pin GPIO - The GPIO is the same as all of the Pi's before it, meaning HATs, Pinouts and Adapter Plates all work the same way with the A+
  • Seeing and Hearing the Pi - HDMI, DSI, CSI, 4 Pole Stereo and Composite Video - With HDMI you can connect right up to any modern screen, the DSI connector is great for using Maker displays, the CSI connector allows you to hook a camera right into the Pi, and there's more by way of composite video. You'll be seeing your Pi desktop with ease.
  • Power - 5.1VDC @ 2.5A via micro-b USB - As is tradition, you can power the Pi Model A+ with any compatible micro-b USB cable and power source. We've got the official supply if you need something today.

Comparing the Pi Model A+ with the other Pi Boards

We got hands on with the A+ as soon as it arrived and did some side by side tests. We found that the A+ uses less power than the B+, but with almost identical performance. Read the full write-up here.

Cases and Accessories for the Pi 3 Model A+

We got our 3D Printing guru to whip up a case for the A+ as soon as it landed, it's got everything you need to enclose your Pi safely. However, most of the original A+ cases will fit the new board quite well. So that's a plus.

Read our design and 3D Printing guide for the A+ case here.

Setting up your Pi 3 Model A+

Once you get your Pi 3 Model A+, you're going to want to use it. We did the same thing, and wrote a handy guide on the process so that you can follow along and get going as soon as possible.

  • Rain Gauge Data Logger
  • Summary A Raspberry Pi 3B is used to collect digital counts from an electronic rain gauge (1mm of rain per reed switch closure by magnetic see-saw). It has been running without issues for over 12 months. A UPS powers the Pi so it is immune from short power glitches. The total count is displayed on an LCD screen with reset and inc/dec test buttons. “To HTML” and “To LCD” routines are also included to simp...
  • Television Media Centre
  • Introduction: I have a flat screen television that is about 7 years old that I purchased before Smart TVs were commonly available. What I wanted to achieve with My Pi project was to turn my slightly old TV into a media centre. I wanted to play music through my TV as well as play saved movies and stream internet content. It was important for me to be able to stream ABC iView and SBS On Demand as they provide a free service and ...
  • mintyPi
  • This is an awesome project that takes about 6 hours to complete. Hours upon hours of endless fun thereafter! Ideally, some prior soldering experience is advantageous but if you take your time and practice before you start it's beginner friendly! The battery will give just over 3 hours on a single charge and can be recharged via the handy micro USB port. System updates, ROM transfers etc all possible with the Pi Zero W' built in...
  • Mass SD card Image Writer
  • We've built a mass SD card writer using a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, some USB hubs and SD card readers. This beast has enough ports to write 49 SD cards at once! At Core Electronics, sometimes logistics hang-ups mean that suppliers cannot meet our demand for pre-flashed SD cards. During these periods we have to pick up the slack by manually imaging blank SD cards we source ourselves. Of course, this is a super-tedious process, and ...

Great addition to the Raspberry Pi range for more simplified needs. Works great as a wifi connected digital signage device. Product shipped very quickly. (Posted on 9/03/2019)

  2. Review by Robert verified purchaser

I am asked to review the Pi 3 A+
Not a lot to say about the unit itself, it just works with no issues, good quality of build.

The Service from Core Electronics is excellent, with competitive pricing, fast delivery and excellent packaging. (Posted on 22/01/2019)

  3. Review by Budi verified purchaser

Cheaper alternative of Rpi3B+ but compared to Rpi3A+ so far i found 4 downside:
    1. Produce more heat
    2. Some of the program used to work on Rpi3B+ doesn't work at Rpi3A+ (such as musicbox).
    3. Slightly slower because of the RAM size.
    4. Internet benchmark showing Rpi3A+ need less power which is make sense from the less components. But i found that its pretty much the same as Rpi3B+ in real world usage. (Posted on 16/01/2019)

  4. Review by Simon verified purchaser

Really enjoyed the speed bump when replacing a Raspberry Pi Zero. (Posted on 6/01/2019)

Nice compact board with the speed of the B+ (Posted on 12/12/2018)

  10. Review by Ben verified purchaser

A handy item if you are looking for something between a Pi 3 Model B, and a Pi Zero-W.
The Model A+ has 1 full sized USB port, full sized HDMI, as well as WiFi and Bluetooth.
I 3D printed myself a case for this. It will be the brains behind a home automation project. (Posted on 10/12/2018)

  11. Review by Chris verified purchaser

Like a Model 3B+, but cheaper and does exactly what I want. Same processor but cheaper is great, thanks for making the option available! (Posted on 30/11/2018)

  12. Review by trevor verified purchaser

The Pi 3 A+ is a sensible hardware upgrade. Smaller area and lower height makes it much more compact overall. No Ethernet socket and a single USB lowers the height as well. Older OS images may not boot, so image a recent release or a NOOBS pre-programmed SD to fire up. Great value and a welcome successor to the 3B series. (Posted on 30/11/2018)
