| Inside the gearbox of the 228:1 plastic gearmotor with offset output. |

This 120:1 plastic gearmotor (gearbox with brushed DC motor) is a great low-cost alternative to modified hobby servos or [Tamiya gearboxes](https://core-electronics.com.au/category/34/tamiya-motors-and-gearboxes). The low-current motor is a perfect match for Pololu's [qik 2s9v1 dual serial motor controller](https://core-electronics.com.au/pololu-qik-2s9v1-dual-serial-motor-controller.html), [Baby Orangutan robot controller](https://core-electronics.com.au/baby-orangutan-b-328-robot-controller.html), or [DRV8833 dual motor driver carrier](https://core-electronics.com.au/drv8833-dual-motor-driver-carrier.html), and the compact size makes this unit an attractive choice for small robot designs. The recommended operating voltage range for this motor is 3 V to 12 V.

This is a lower-torque, higher-speed version of the [228:1 plastic gearmotor offset output](https://core-electronics.com.au/228-1-plastic-gearmotor-offset-output.html). At 6 V, the gearbox and motor provide approximately 75 oz-in of torque and 85 RPM. The free-running current is 70 mA, and the stall current is 800 mA. The gearbox is protected by a built-in safety clutch that will typically slip before gear teeth can shear.

This gearmotor comes pre-assembled, with the gears fully enclosed, and the output shaft is 6 mm long and 7 mm in diameter with two sides flattened. The output shaft is along the same axis as the motor shaft, but offset; Pololu also sell a version of this gearmotor with a [90° output shaft](https://core-electronics.com.au/120-1-plastic-gearmotor-90-output.html).

There are two built-in mounting holes that work with Pololu's [stamped aluminum L-bracket](https://core-electronics.com.au/pololu-stamped-aluminum-l-bracket-pair-for-plastic-gearmotors.html) and [extended stamped aluminum L-bracket](https://core-electronics.com.au/pololu-extended-stamped-aluminum-l-bracket-pair-for-plastic-gearmotors.html), as shown in the pictures below:

A custom-molded [GMPW plastic wheel](https://core-electronics.com.au/solarbotics-gmpw-r-red-wheel.html) for this gearmotor is available in a variety of colors.

This MATLAB script, written by Ali Asgher Mansoor Habiby, plots speed, power, current draw, and efficiency as they vary with torque when you input the gearmotor specifications. It also prints the resistance of the motor, and the current draw and torque at which maximum efficiency and maximum power occur.
