The Monochron's a great little kit. The hardware's easy to put together - my 13 year old with one previous kit under his belt finished all the soldering in a couple of hours, then the next night put it all together and the result looks great.

The board has a small prototyping area and provides access to all the micro pins, which can be handy: we added a light sensor for automatic brightness control (details are on the Adafruit forum).

Alas, the software is not beginner-friendly - few comments, kind of hard to follow. Fortunately there's a little clock hacker community at the adafruit forum, check out Emuchron.

Nitpicks: the supplied power supply is for the US and useless in Australia, so budget another ~$18 for a 9V DC plugpack from Jaycar. Also, one of the buttons failed after a couple of days, fortunately Jaycar carry identical replacements (~$1).
